Mentor role

  • Share with a mentee (or protege) information about his or her own career path.
  • Provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling.
  • Help with exploring careers, setting goals, and identifying resources.
  • Establishes with the mentee, the mentee’s explicit goals and objectives for the relationship.
  • Takes the lead in the mentor-mentee relationship, but allows the mentee to take responsibility for their growth, development, and planning.
  • Ends the relationship at the agreed-upon time.

Mentee role

  • Share ideas, concerns, and professional goals with the mentor.
  • Be prepared and punctual for the mentoring sessions and establish the agenda for the conversation.
  • Email topics of discussion to the mentor ahead of time, if you think the mentor would appreciate it. At the beginning of each session, provide a brief update on progress since the last conversation.
  • You are responsible for initiating all contact with your mentor.
  • Establish a mutually agreeable plan for mentoring sessions.
  • Your mentor is a volunteer whose time is limited. By ensuring that conversations start and end on time, you will demonstrate respect and responsibility.
  • Ask direct questions about what you want to know. You are responsible for ensuring the conversation meets your needs.
  • Take notes. Capture ideas and insights from the sessions.
  • Respect your mentor’s boundaries. Outside of the session, most mentors have very limited time to engage with mentees. Be careful not to inundate your mentor with emails or phone calls.

Both mentor and mentee should ensure that they:

  • Feel comfortable proceeding with the relationship and the mentor must ensure they have the necessary skills and experience to support the mentee.
  • Prepare for the meeting and are clear on expectations and ground rules (Mentee should organize and arrange the logistics).
  • Have a clear understanding and agreement on the level of confidentiality required within the mentoring relationship.
  • Adhere to the ground rules to build mutual trust and respect.
  • Close the relationship at the right time, reflect and share feedback (Mentees evaluate their development in line with the objectives agreed).
